Nemaura Pharma
Developing a new drug delivery patch
Background
Nemaura Pharma is a young Loughborough based company pushing the boundaries of new technology. It specialises in developing advanced drug-delivery systems, including novel formulations, devices for controlled delivery and diagnostics, and innovative methods for improving absorption rates.
Challenge
To develop the enabling technologies for the creation of a new skin patch for non- invasive diagnostics and integrated response drug delivery.
Solution
First, the PMC created a fully functional prototype, demonstrating the feasibility of the design and how it could be optimised for cost-effective manufacture and full-scale production. Then we secured £1.3m in funding from the Technology Strategy Board to optimise the design, process integration, testing and validation of a transdermal non-invasive diagnostic device which will permit high-volume manufacture in the UK. These activities will be supported by a steering group of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, health centre staff and medical device specialists.
We will also be working with the company over the next two years to create significant new business opportunities in innovative knowledge intensive technology – in particular small, robust, portable, low-cost systems for point of care use.
