Consumer-Appealing Low Energy technologies for Building Retrofitting - CALEBRE

The overall aim of the project is to establish a validated, comprehensive mechanism for reducing UK domestic carbon emissions that is acceptable and appealing to users. The specific measurable objectives of the project are:

• Identify challenges to be overcome in developing appropriate technologies capable of inclusion within an integrated package of measures for reducing UK domestic carbon emissions from the existing solid-wall housing stock.
• Evaluation of the appropriate technologies from the perspective of technical performance, and user acceptability based on lab and field trials.
• Development of a design tool for use by suppliers and householders for optimal selection of a set of measures for individual households that can be implemented in a single package.
• Investigation of the potential of advanced insulation techniques as longer-term solutions for demand-side carbon reduction.

The work at the PMC aims to develop a robust design and manufacturing methodology for cost-efficient volume production of next generation customisable energy saving products. This aim will be achieved through the following:

• Identification of key product features and linking these to product functions and ease of manufacture
• Development of an integrated design and manufacturing methodology
• Verification and demonstration of the methodology using test cases
