Niels’ expertise is in the area of manufacturing systems technology, modelling and design decision-making, with a primary focus on modular and evolvable assembly systems.
His current work is on computer-aided decision-support systems for the design and adaptation of evolvable assembly systems. He is investigating the application of latest self-organisation approaches developed in the computer and biological sciences to enhance the adaptability and responsiveness of complex, one-of-a-kind manufacturing systems. Niels is also looking to enhance the effectiveness of virtual factory planning tools with particular focus on their appropriateness for small and medium sized enterprises. His work addresses communication efficiency and effectiveness in ever more diverse global decision-making environments. Another aspect of his work sees him focused on investigating the application of design history systems and shared description models (ontologies) to support for the customisation of automotive cars and trucks.
